Dave McClelland of Jamestown, PA was selected to participate in the first two mustang training competitions sponsored by the Mustang Heritage Foundation.   Dave was chosen as one of 100 Trainers in the Extreme Mustang Makeover held in Fort Worth, TX (Sept '07), and again, as one of 50 competitors in the Midwest Mustang Challenge in Madison, WI (April '08).

He has joined an elite group known for their love of Mustangs and for their expertise with the wild animals.   Dave is a veteran trainer and has worked with Mustangs since 1999.   He has owned 5 Mustangs and trained many over the years from the first satellite-adopted mustang in Virginia, to many others in New York and Pennsylvania.

Dave also trains domestic horses including the grandson of Rugged Lark and son of Painted Rugged Lark who just left his farm in January 2009.

Our first meeting
Dave meets his Midwest Mustang Challenge partner Kind-Eyes Legacy for the first time on Saturday, January 12, 2008.  Once he had hold of her lead rope he never let go until she was trailered a few hours later.  Read more about Dave’s training philosophy on subsequent pages.
Dave’s newest mustang, Kind-Eyes Legacy, a 3-year old bay, sorrel mare has a star and strip on her forehead, with lighter colored muzzle and legs.   She was captured on August 10, 2006, from the Gerlach, Washoe/Nevada Twin Peaks area.   Slick, Dave’s Extreme Mustang Makeover gelding, had been captured six days later on August 16, 2006, from the same herd area.   Dave and his wife, Cindy, adopted Slick following the Ft. Worth competition and brought him back to Clear View Ranch, their home in Pennsylvania.

Cindy has been reluctant to try another horse since becoming so comfortable with her trusty but aging white Arabian "Misty".     Since trying 'Kind Eyes' no one has seen her on anything else while Misty is content getting hand fed in the back yard or just roaming the pasture.

Slick after gentling and before breaking to ride. Training Experience & Expertise
Dave's experience includes colt starting, problem solving, and working with wild mustangs.  He has been listed on the BLM web site as a trainer from Pennsylvania since 2001.  Dave offers one and two-day clinics teaching gentling techniques, confidence building, and relationship development with your horse.   Dave has studied under Chris Cox and has attended three of his clinics at his Diamond Double C Ranch in Mineral Wells, TX.   Dave considers Chris to be a friend and one of the greatest influences in his horse training experience.   He uses Chris' rope halter and bridle set in all his training, and believes them to be the best training tools available.

Dave and Cindy have kept in touch with trainers they have met through participating in the Extreme Mustang Makeover and the Midwest Mustang Challenge and enjoy the friendships developed from the competitions.   The trainers are more than willing to share their training experiences, as well as their excitement for the upcoming competitions.   It has become apparent that those they have spoken with have a true passion for the well-being of the horse, and that natural horsemanship skills are predominantly used.
